The 5th Golden Anchor Shipping Awards organized by Dünya Gazetesi Perşembe Rotası and the Maritime News Agency took place in a ceremony held at the Istanbul Ataköy Sheraton Hotel on July 2nd. A total of 17 Golden Anchors were handed out at the ceremony, where plaques were given to individuals and organizations that had contributed to the sector. Recipients of the awards and plaques were determined by a jury under the leadership of Erol Yücel, Sector President for the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB).
The awards ceremony was attended by Arkas Holding Chairman Lucien Arkas, Arkas Holding Executive Vice President Bernard Arcas and Diane Arcas Aktaş, Egekont General Manager Cenk Değer, Arkas Shipping General Manager Murat Denizeri, MSC Turkey General Manager Hasan Piroğlu, Grimaldi Lines Turkey Commercial Operations Director Francesco Olivieri and Arkas Shipping executives.
Transportation Minister Binali Yıldırım joined the ceremony and expressed made remarks via video conference, noting how important the Golden Anchor Awards were to the sector and expressing his gratitude to Dünya Gazetesi and the Maritime News Agency. Transportation Minister Binali Yıldırım said that the Turkish straits were a challenging waterway for tankers and ships making transit due to the fact that there are 8 points with turns of up to 85 degrees. He said that a continual rise in the transportation of petroleum and petroleum derivatives through these waters was not a sustainable model for transportation since the physical characteristics of the waterway could not be changed. Yıldırım emphasized their determination to take the additional measures necessary on transits of this type starting with relevant security precautions. Yıldırım also stated that they were drawing up new regulations related to cabotage. At the awards ceremony, Arkas Shipping, which operates in the field of international maritime shipping, serving five of the world's leading shipping companies, received the Best Container Ship Agency of the Year award. Arkas Holding Executive Vice President Bernard Arcas received the award on behalf of Arkas Shipping from TOBB Deputy Chairman Halim Mete.

“The key to success is a proactive approach”

MSC and Grimaldi Lines receive awards in the International Shipping Awards category
This year two international shipping awards were presented. Grimaldi Lines was selected as the “Car Carrier Operator of the Year" and Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. as the “Container Line Operator of the Year". Turkey Commercial Operations Director Francesco Olivieri received the award on behalf of Grimaldi Lines from Metin Kalkavan, Chairman of the Maritime Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and MSC General Manager Hasan Piroğlu was given the award for Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. by TOBB Sector President Erol Yücel.
