19.03.2008
Arkas, one of the biggest transport companies in Turkey, last month started its Anatolian Project to expand its transport network connecting railways to the ports Steel Business Briefing learns from the company. Arkas Anatolian Project team states that “the main target of the project is to connect the inner Anatolian cities to the Anatolian ports by railways to the benefit of Turkish industry.” The project is the biggest logistics project run by private sector in Turkey SBB was told. With the project it will be possible to provide sea container transportation services to the inner cities of Anatolia, as well as better warehouse and distribution services. Accessibility will rise for the importers and exporters to the seaports from the inland Anatolian cities such as Ankara, Eskisehir, Konya and Kayseri. The project, planned to be completed in five years, will potentially serve to replace trucks by railway transportation for imported/exported steel between the seaports and inner Anatolia, providing cheaper and safer transportation for the steel products. Steel occupies 4% of the company’s total capacity by railways, and 1% by sea transport. Arkas has also introduced the special transport system “Coil-tainer”, in which the coil is transported in a container to guard against damage during handling, and it is safer to get it loaded out which reduces the insurance costs.
